Bologna, the city of arcades
Seat of the oldest university in the Western world, Bologna , in Emilia-Romagna , is a city with an intense cultural life and a very interesting historical heritage. European capital of culture in 2000, in 2006 it was declared a “creative city of music” by UNESCO. Among the most important symbols of Bologna are its characteristic arcades , or covered walkways that join streets, towers and buildings and which only in the center reach a total length of about 38 kilometers. Characteristics of the city are its towers, which offer tourists the opportunity to admire a wonderful panorama from above. Among the most important, Torre di Garisenda and Torre degli Asinelli , belonged to a complex of about a hundred medieval towers, of which only about twenty examples remain today.
Just 60 km away, Bologna can be easily reached in forty minutes along the fast Porrettana state road SS64 which directly connects Cà Gennara bed and breakfast with the city center.
Florence, cradle of the Renaissance
The beating heart of Florence is Piazza del Duomo, with the monumental complex of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore - surmounted by the majestic dome by Brunelleschi -, the Baptistery of San Giovanni - a magnificent example of Florentine Romanesque -, Giotto's Bell Tower - a Florentine Gothic architecture. Piazza della Signoria represents the historical center of civil life and houses the fourteenth-century Loggia dei Lanzi, the Fountain of Neptune and the Palazzo della Signoria or Palazzo Vecchio, one of the symbolic monuments of the city, in front of which there are some famous statues including a copy of Michelangelo's famous David.
Next to the square is the majestic Uffizi Gallery , home to one of the most important museums in the world, which includes works by Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and many other great artists. Through the ancient and suggestive Ponte Vecchio, scattered with historic goldsmith shops, you reach the Oltrarno district, where you meet the scenic square dominated by Palazzo Pitti, the imposing and sumptuous palace that was the residence of the Medici and Lorraine, with the wonderful park, the Boboli Gardens, a splendid example of an Italian garden.
Cà Gennara bed and breakfast near Florence is 80 km from Florence, easily reachable by first taking the A1 motorway and then taking the A11 motorway link to Pistoia and finally along the SS64 state road Porrettana towards Porretta Terme.
Pistoia, a city of enchanted stone
The Piazza del Duomo is still defined today by the main buildings that over the centuries have characterized the political and religious life of the city: the Palazzo Comunale, the Palazzo Pretorio, the Cathedral of San Zeno , the Palazzo dei Vescovi, the Baptistery and the spectacular tower bell.
The suggestive Piazza della Sala belongs to the oldest nucleus, a nucleus that includes several sacred buildings (although sometimes deconsecrated), which with their presence testify to the centrality of religion in the history of Pistoia. The ancient center is included in a ring that follows the route of the first circle of walls, walking through these streets you come across unexpected and precious works: in addition to the aforementioned Piazza del Duomo it is worth remembering the Ospedale del Ceppo, decorated from the majestic “Robbiano frieze”, the parish church of Sant'Andrea with the splendid pulpit by Giovanni Pisano, or the Church of the Tau , completely decorated with beautiful medieval frescoes.
The gaze of those who visit Pistoia will then be attracted by the white and black marbles that decorate the exterior of the church of San Giovanni Fuorcivitas , just beyond which you can reach the complex of the church of San Filippo Neri and the Fabroniana Library.
The itinerary continues to the Civic Museums of Pistoia for a concentrate of ancient art inside the Palazzo Comunale, but also for an in-depth study on twentieth century and contemporary art, at Palazzo Fabroni.
But to really discover Pistoia it is necessary to get out of the city center and discover the hills that surround it, to be explored by getting lost in the paths of the Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese : not to be missed is the village of Orsigna and, once here it may be worth making a stop at Molino di Giamba, you get in touch with the most hidden and rural soul of the city.
Cà Gennara b & b is only 30 km from Pistoia, easily reachable along the SS64 Porrettana state road in just 35 minutes.
